Mr Mercer's wife, Felicity Cornelius-Mercer, publicly defended her husband, tweeting that Mr Wallace was showing "disdain" for the veterans' minister.
The defence secretary took another jab as he compared their differing responsibilities, adding that he runs "a department of 224,000 people", while Mr Mercer has "12 people in the office".
He added that the defence budget has to deal "with inflation, with changes to threat". Speaking to LBC this morning, Mr Wallace said: "Johnny is a junior minister, and Johnny luckily doesn't have to run the budget." It comes after Mr Mercer said yesterday it was "not credible" for Mr Wallace to say Britain's armed forces had been "hollowed out" - a statement he made last month.
